Henry Lee, MD (Outcomes Research)

SM40011LeeHenry_UArDr. Henry Lee completed undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Illinois and came to Stanford to complete pediatrics residency training. Subsequently, he completed a neonatology fellowship under the guidance of Dr. Jeffrey Gould, Director of the Perinatal Epidemiology and Health Outcomes Research Unit and Principal Investigator of the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC), a data-driven statewide quality improvement organization for neonatal care. After fellowship, Dr. Lee worked for the University of California, San Francisco and entered the CTSI K Scholars Program, a career development program for clinical and translational research. Under the mentorship of Dr. Adams Dudley of UCSF’s Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, he obtained a K23 Award from the NICHD to study nutrition and breast milk provision for preterm infants in California. Over this period, Dr. Lee developed several interests related to outcomes and health services research: 1) the use of quality assessment in order to actively promote quality improvement, 2) methods to effectively translate evidence into practice, and 3) evaluation of quality improvement interventions. Dr. Lee returned to Stanford in 2013 and currently serves as the Director of Research of CPQCC, and sits on the Data Steering Committee of the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, its sister organization for maternal care. He is intimately involved in the administration and research agendas for both groups, both which are based at Stanford. In those two settings, Dr. Lee and his colleagues have been able to perform important large-scale implementation studies to improve perinatal care, assessments of individual and hospital-based risk patterns for outcomes, and work on disparities. He and his colleagues in the Perinatal Epidemiology and Health Outcomes Research Unit have a track record of fostering trainees in epidemiology, quality improvement, and health services research. Dr. Lee’s research has been recognized by the David W. Smith Pediatric Research Award given by the Western Society for Pediatric Research and the David Wirtschafter NICU Quality Improvement Award given by the California Association of Neonatologists.
